Derek Basista efforts are rapidly bearing fruit, he not only has three degrees, but is also the founder and CEO of two successful New Jersey companies: Charity Events Group and AWC Global Business Solutions, and he is under 30 years old!

Ihave met people that have accomplished amazing things, but this businessman is really out of the ordinary. I am amazed how Basista is growing his business while improving the economy of his city and helping poor people, and low-budget companies at the same time.

Basista was born in the town of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. He was a kid like any other except that he was the victim of sexual abuse.

“From the time I was about 5 years old all the way through the time I was 13, I was sexually abused by my birth mom and step dad’s friends, and this left me wondering why me? Why do I have to go through this?”, expressed Basista with a faltering voice.

“Not only was I tormented for being myself but it was even harder due to the fact I was gay”, he added. Regarding his birth father, “I did not know him until I was 18 years old”.

When Basista turned 13 years old, he finally decided that it was time to tell somebody about what was going on, “so I told a teacher and in result, I was taken away from my family and put in foster care. That was probably one of the best things that ever happened to me. I was raised by an amazing foster family who loved me unconditionally”, he assured.

Therefore Basista moved to Greenville, Tennessee, to live with his new foster parents. His mother was a school janitor and his father a policeman. Under the wing of this middle-class family from the Philippines, Derek learned the values, discipline and goals that he has “applied to my life to become the man I am today”.

This wasn’t the only love Basista found, he met Christopher in Newark in 2002 and it was “love at first sight”. They were internet friends for two years before they met in person. They have lived together since 2007 and were married in 2014. Example of Perseverance At 23, Basista went to DeVry University in Chicago, where he received a degree in Business Administration and an MBA. He also has a B.A. in law from the National Paralegal College, an online distance learning institution.

These were hard times for Basista: “I was going to school and also helping my husband to run the web design business. There were days that I went to school, leaving the house from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm, coming home to work until 3:00 in the morning, I would sleep a few hours and get up and do it all over again”, he said.

In 2010, Basista founded AWC Global Business Solutions, a worldwide web design and digital marketing business. Despite the success of this company, he had a feeling that he had to help people in need.

It was in 2013, when he was having dinner with his family when he decided to create Charity Events Group, one of the first event planning, design and marketing firms in the nation that work solely for charities and non-profit organizations. In 2016 he opened up a new branch of this company in Piscataway, New Jersey.

As owner and CEO of Charity Events Group, Basista not only helps many of the Ronald McDonald House of Central & Northern New Jersey’s fundraising events, but also is Assistant Director of ElectricFM, one of the largest online dance radio stations in the world.

When asked about an anecdote of his work, he said he was very proud of holding a dinner to thank crews from more than 90 fire companies for the invaluable support for the massive fire that took so much property from the town of Hillsborough, New Jersey on February of 2016. The money raised was donated to “The Fallen Firefighters of New Jersey”.

It was for his vision and dedication to this event that Basista was presented with a Joint State Resolution on behalf of the State of New Jersey by Assemblymen Andrew Zwicker and Jack Ciattarellie on April of 2016 in his hometown of Manville, New Jersey.

“And that made me realize I have to keep going, this is where I belong, this is what I’m meant to do and this is what I’ll probably do for the rest of my life”, Basista pointed out.

At the age of 29, Basista has made reality his professional and personal dreams: He has created a profitable company that helps people in need and has even sung at NASCAR!

When asked where he wants to be in the next five years he responded, “I want to get to the point that I am a household name for all charities and non-for-profits anywhere in the United States”.

Five hundred firefighters spent over 24 hours battling the warehouse blaze, which was investigated by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The bureau's National Response Team couldn't determine how the fire started, but said there was no indication it was intentionally set.

Charity Events Group, started by Manville resident Derek Basista, is organizing the community dinner to honor crews from more than 90 fire companies in five counties. 

"We will never have all the words to say 'thank you' but we hope in some way by bringing in the countless people who helped keep this fire under control, we can share a night of great food, music, and friendships," Basista said on the GoFundMe site he's started to help finance the evening.

The event will be at Thomas J. Kavanaugh VFW Post 2290 in Manville on Saturday, April 2, 6-10 p.m. The post is at 600 Washington Ave.

Invitations to all the firefighters involved are in the mail, and Basista says he's lined up Hillsborough Township's support.

The band Heritage 3 will donate its talents for the evening. The three-piece acoustic rock band from Manville covers songs from the 1960s to modern day.

Basista said attendees will also hear from Millstone Mayor Raymond Heck, Manville Mayor Richard Onderko and state Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker, who has told Basista he'll be issuing resolutions to each fire station. 

The menu will include "everything from chicken to roast beef, and all the sides," Basista said. Hillsborough ShopRite's donating to the event, and Basista said Friday he's raised $2,120 via GoFundMe and another $250 in cash donations.

HILLSBOROUGH - Federal and local authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of massive fire last week that caused several million of dollars of damage to a Route 206 industrial park.

Agents from the Bureau of Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), based in Newark, and personnel from the ATF's National Response Team are leading the investigation into the fire that destroyed two 240,000-square-foot warehouses at the Veterans Industrial Center.

Also participating in the probe are the Hillsborough Township Bureau of Fire Safety, Hillsborough Police Department, New Jersey State Division of Fire Safety and the federal Department of  Veterans Affairs.

With the probe still ongoing, plans are beginning to come together for an event to honor the efforts of the approximately 500 firefighters from more than 30 fire companies in five counties that responded to the fire on Feb. 11 and 12.

At one time, more than 200 fire vehicles were on the site.

Manville resident Derek Basista, owner of Charity Events Group, is organizing the dinner scheduled tentatively for the first weekend in April at the Manville VFW.

"I am always looking for something to do for others," the event planner said.

Invitations will be sent to the hundreds of firefighters who battled the raging fire in frigid cold and high winds. Basista said he expects 350 to 400 people to attend the event, which will be a buffet dinner.

An invitation has been sent to Gov. Chris Christie to attend the event, Basista said.

Invitations have also been sent to the mayors of Hillsborough and Manville to speak at the event, along with fire chiefs, he said.

Basista is hoping that plaques will be donated to each fire company that responded.

There will also be a DJ and live music, he said.

Basista is seeking monetary donations for the dinner at four days, as of Wednesday afternoon, the site had garnered nearly $1,600 from more than 50 people. The goal is $10,000.

Cause of massive Hillsborough fire undetermined

"It's coming together," Basista said. "I feel a little relieved."

It took more than two days to contain the spectacular fire that consumed two 240,000-square-foot warehouses in the industrial park on Route 206 between the Norfolk Southern Railroad and Duke Farms.

The fire was centered in units that contained plastic pellets used in moulding and wood products.

The fire, which erupted Thursday afternoon, was one of the biggest blazes in recent Somerset County history. The billowing black smoke could be seen for dozens of miles and the plume could be detected on weather radar.

Federal authorities are involved in the investigation because the complex is owned by the Veterans Administration and is leased to a private company that subleases the warehouse space.

The site was formerly the Somerville National Defense stockpile depot, where 2,800 tons of mercury were stored — 60 percent of the nation's stockpile. After the mercury was transferred to a federal facility in Nevada in 2010, the property was converted into an industrial park.

The complex was built during World War II and was used as warehouse space because of its location next to what was then the Lehigh  Valley Railroad. 

The fire did not involve the warehouses that once stored the mercury.

Two minor injuries were reported.

PISCATAWAY, NJ – The start of a new era for Derek Basista began Friday, Sept. 30 when he cut the ribbon at the grand opening ceremony for Charity Events Group’s (CEG) new Piscataway headquarters at 30 Knightsbridge Road off of Route 287.

Four years ago Basista founded CEG, a national events management firm that specializes in organizing gala affairs for charities and various types of non-profit organizations.

The Manville resident chose Piscataway as the company’s new home after realizing that in order to grow, he needed to move operations to a facility that allows him better access to the communities he wants to target throughout New Jersey: non-profit foundations and charitable fundraising organizations.

Basista’s journey began seven years ago, when after graduating from DeVry University with a degree in business administration, he started a web design and business solutions company serving companies of all types. But despite the successes that came with it, he kept feeling the need to help non-profit companies wherever he could.

“I felt like something was missing so I started planning and designing events for the Ronald McDonald Foundation as a volunteer,” said CEG’s founder. “I realized it was something I really enjoyed doing; my heart was in it.”

This experience led Basista to form Charity Events Group which designs, plans, and markets events for non-profits and charities. “They’re the ones that need the most help,” he said. “Event planning companies and designers are expensive.”

CEG, which can coordinate events anywhere in the country, charges set rates to help clients plan their budgets. “My goal is to provide a service I know I’m very good at to people who can’t necessarily afford another company, for a much lower rate,” Basista said.

He noted that what sets CEG apart from their competitors is that they are also able to be charitable through their Donation Program which donates a portion of an event’s proceeds back to the charity that referred the client.  “Why should we keep the money when you need it more than we do,” said the entrepreneur.

“I care about knowing that I’ve given the client an event they can be proud of, I’ve given them an event that could potentially have brought in more profit through fund raising and I’ve given them a donation so that at the end of the day I’ve left them a little better off than when I met them,” he said.

Because of his care for what he does as lead designer, Basista and his team at CEG have grown their portfolio of clients around the state and the country to include a variety of non-profit organizations and charities such as HomeFront NJ, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Atlanta’s Rally! Foundation.

And the CEG team continues to design themed gala events and golf tournaments for the Ronald McDonald Foundation, the company’s first-ever client, as they fundraise to build a new Ronald McDonald House in New Brunswick.

Basista considers April, 2016, to be a turning point for Charity Events Group when he and the company were awarded a Joint Legislation Resolution by the State of New Jersey and Assemblymen Andrew Zwicker and Jack Ciattarelli of the 16th District in recognition for their work in organizing the Hillsborough-Fire Thank You Dinner to show appreciation to over 600 first responders who assisted in a February warehouse fire.

CEG has also been recognized by the Gallagher Group International, recently receiving their prestigious Power of Diversity Award for the work they are doing in the community.

“I want to let the surrounding communities and counties know that we are here,” said Basista. “Let us know how we can help.”
